Tradie romance, a new sub-genre?

18/10/2017

Check me out, on site, boots and all!!!

As many of you know, we’re currently renovating our home, and the tradesmen I deal with are super nice. When they found out I write romance, they encouraged me to write a “tradie romance”. What do you think? A new sub-genre? Much better than “Lust in the Dust” 😉

PS – tradie = tradesman (Aussie slang)

  1. Our landscapers started work today… It was hot… Very… Over 30 degrees… I definitely think you’re onto something 🙂

  2. Yes, I think there would be many readers up for a Tradie Romance 🙂 I am writing a “working class hero” now, and made reference to another yummy character in a tool belt, in my last book 🙂

  3. Ohh I love a man who knows how to use power tools or any tools for that matter . Go for it please!

    1. Me too 😉 I know, there’s something sexy about a guy who can create things!!!

Thanks for the encouragement, I think I need to write a book with a sexy tradie 🙂

  4. What about a tradie who is actually filling in for one of his lads, get the job done at all costs, hands on, organic multimillionaire who started it all from the tray of his ute. . . It has merit

  5. I don’t think I’ve read a tradie romance before so I say, go for it Joanne! And the way you write I reckon it will be a fun and incredible read.

    1. *I’m blushing* – thanks so much Sue 🙂

Many years ago, I read a fab romance (wish I’d kept it) about a rich woman a blue-collar worker, and how they were able to overcome their issues to be together. Never read another tradie romance since….I might need to write one 😉 Thanks for the encouragement xo

  6. You’re welcome, Joanne! And by the way you look gorgeous and those boots are awesome! xoxo

  7. I usually pick romance books based on the trope rather than the author, so seeing the different themes listed here was actually helpful. The fake marriage and fish-out-of-water stories caught my attention more than the others. One thing I always wonder with connected series is whether new readers can jump into any book without feeling lost. It sounds like these are standalones, which is nice because sometimes keeping up with a long series gets a bit overwhelming.

  9. Hallo to all romance readers discovering this fun idea. Tradie romance honestly has brilliant potential as a subgenre. Hardworking, skilled, and genuinely dependable heroes resonate deeply with readers who appreciate authenticity over fantasy. Australian settings would make these stories even more uniquely compelling.

  10. This article makes a strong case for exploring romance in more practical, real world settings. The concept of tradie romance feels authentic and less glamorous, which is actually its strength. It is nice to see authors experimenting with stories that reflect everyday life rather than only idealized characters.

  11. This was such a fun and lighthearted idea “tradie romance” definitely has potential as a quirky sub-genre, real-life inspiration from your renovation experience makes it even more authentic, and it’s easy to see how everyday interactions with tradesmen could spark romantic or comedic storytelling moments.

  12. This is a fun and refreshing idea for a blog post. The concept of “tradie romance” feels like a natural extension of contemporary romance sub-genres, especially with its grounded, everyday setting and relatable characters. It’s interesting how real-life experiences like home renovations and interacting with tradesmen can inspire creative writing ideas. There’s definitely potential here for a niche that blends humor, authenticity, and romance in a very down-to-earth way.

  13. This is such a fun idea for a sub-genre,workplace-based romance stories are always popular, and focusing on tradesmen adds a unique and relatable angle, specially in australian culture.

  14. Not sure if “tradie romance” really needs its own label, but the idea is kind of funny in a way. I’ve been around renovation work too and most of the interactions are just normal day-to-day stuff, not exactly novel material. Maybe it works as a niche if the story is strong enough, otherwise it might feel forced. Still, I guess readers like fresh angles these days. Depends how it’s written more than the category itself I think overall though yeah
