Christmas Kiss, New Year’s Wish

Where do you get your ideas from? It’s one of the questions writers seem to get asked regularly. Even though I say “everywhere”, my friends don’t seem to believe me. But it’s true. There are interesting people and stories everywhere. A snippet here or there is often the basis for my books.

For our wedding anniversary, my husband and I went to the Elvis Presley show – The Wonder of You, which features Elvis (on a giant screen) singing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It was a brilliant event, which we loved, and there were tons of Elvis fans.

Seated near us were a couple. The guy was dressed as Elvis in his trademark white jumpsuit, large sunglasses and he had plenty of charisma. His partner looked fabulous in a 1960s style miniskirt and go go boots, and they both happily posed for photos before the concert started.

I managed to chat with “Elvis” during the intermission, and after gushing over their amazing outfits, I asked if him if he was an impersonator. No. Turns out he was just a fan.

This guy was younger than me and looked the part. It got me thinking about using such a character in one of my books. At the time, I was about to start writing Christmas Kiss, New Year’s Wish and wanted my hero, Luca to have something to do with Elvis.

I toyed with the idea of him being on stage as an impersonator but in the end I settled with a super, smart scientist who has a secret obsession with Elvis’ music and movies. I paired him up with his best friend, Taylor. Add some mistletoe, some steamy kisses and voila, I had an awesome friends to lovers holiday story.

I have two copies of Christmas Kiss, New Year’s Wish to gift, all you need to do is wish me a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah or Happy Holidays. I will randomly chose the winners!

  7. Have a very merry Christmas from one elvis fan to another ! Have loved him since I was a kid….we went thru Parkes this year to go to the Elvis museum and my aunty and uncle went to Graceland. Anyway have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year

    Though probably Elvis would say in a southern drawl “Merry Christmas, Baby” and then serenade you with In the Ghetto! Wouldn’t that be wonderful!
